Palm Beach began as a strip of post-war timber and fibro beach shacks, with canal estates carved in around Lakes Awonga and Waidup off Tallebudgera Creek through the 1950s and 60s. In recent years the suburb has seen a heavy wave of knock-down-rebuilds and new duplexes and apartments, so the housing mix now runs from surviving fibro beach houses off the numbered avenues to canal homes near the lakes and newer builds along the Gold Coast Highway. The suburb's surviving post-war and 1960s to 80s beach houses are the busiest job type. Between the beachfront and the Tallebudgera and Currumbin creek canals, homes also breathe salt-laden air year round, and it works away at meter boxes, outdoor points and switchgear faster than inland. Backyard pools are common on the canal and detached blocks and need their own dedicated, RCD-protected and bonded circuits with corrosion-resistant fittings.

Location matters too. Palm Beach sits low, around six metres above sea level, between Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek and the Coral Sea, so storm surge and creek flooding are a real seasonal factor, and summer storms put sudden load through the network.
